Right after the second World War the United Kingdom evolved into an immigration country. The topic was really contetious in public and politics and even parties like the United Kingdom Independence Party gained Votes with an attitude against immigrants.
Development & reasons
In the postwar years
After the second Worl War the UK needed more workmen because of the high wealth, so most of the new workers came from the colonies. The immigrants from the old colonies had better immigration requirements than other, mainly because of the british citizenship law. Both benefited, the immigrants who wanted a better life and the british citizens who needed new workforce.
In the 1950ies to 1970ies
In the 1950ies and 1960ies severel waves of immigration took place. The biggest parts of the black-skin people living in the UK (2011) came in immigration movements especially between the 1950ies and 1960ies from the british colonies, India, Africa and from the Carribean. Approximatly 500.000 immigrants, mostly young men, came to Britain untill the conservative government enforced more immigration controls in 1962.
In 1964 the Labour Party was governing Party again and had to face the circumstances evoked by the family reunion of the immigrants who came before 1962. So the party left their engagement for Immigration and open borders behind and pushed more immigration controls through as well. Nevertheless the ammount of immigrations did not decrease.
