Basic rules
Simple past: The simple past is the first form of the past. If you want to explain something with a time word, you always use the simple past.
Past perfect: If you want to explain something that happens before something other in the past, you use the past perfect.
Example: "But Elizabeth I never really knew her mother because she had died in 1536".
Deeper explaination
Simple Past: You build the simple past with the time word for example "yesterday", a pronoun for example "I" ,a verb for example "was/were" or for example an activity like "fishing".
Example: "Yesterday I was fishing".
Past perfect:You build the past perfect with a personal prounuon for example "She", "had", a word like "already" or "just" a,form of the Past progressive for example "made" and another word.
Example: "She had alredy made the bed
