A short history of Australia
40.000 years ago: Humans first started to arrive Australia from Asia. They spread all over the huge continent and created trade routes for stone, wood, shells and other goods.
16th century: The first Europeans came to Australia. The figure was between 300,000 and 1 million.
in 1770: Captain James Cook claimed the worlds largest island for Britian.
1788, 1868 and the years between: The BRitish started a colony for convicts in Sydney. In the next 80 years Britian brought over 160,000 convicts to Australia. Other immigrants arrived and they started colonies in different parts of the continent together with the former convicts.
in 1901: Australia became independent.
20th century: Aborigines kept its close links to Britian and fought with the British in both world wars.
1970s: Australia has done more and more business with Asia, and lots of immigrants came to Asutralia from asian countries.
