The United Nations Organization (UN, or UNO) is one of the most popular international organisations. With 193 member countries almost every country on the earth is in the UN. The UN declared international human rights and was build to preserve global peace in the aftermath of the Second World War.

History

The "Charta of the United Nations" was signed by 51 countries on the 24th of October in 1945. Its main purpose back than was to prevent another war. The original ideas were based on the 1920's League of Nations but that was never really implemented.

Tasks

The UN consists of several different organs to fight global issues like hunger, poverty, child mortality or war. One of the most important parts is the General Assembly. Here, all 193 members of the UN are gathering to discuss controversial topics. They meet each September and vote about their ongoing actions. Normally, they only need the majority of votes but for resolutions around 66,67% have to agree. Furthermore, the Security Council debates about conflicts on large scales and they have the competence of imposing sanctions. The meetings consist of the five permanent members (US, France, Russia, UK and China) and ten changing ones. These members are going to be selected for all two years and attempt to represent the biggest parts of the earth. In contrast to the ten changing members, only the permanent ones have veto power. The Economic And Social Council is willing to work with other specialised agencies and NGOs. The most popular ones are the WTO (World Trade Organisation) and Unicef. Another essential organ is the International Court of Justice in Den Haag. Their task is quite obvious. They assess the global actions of countries and eventually they impose sanctions or warn them. Finally, there is also the secretariat whos leader is Guterre. Preliminary, they deal with administrative exercises and they write reports about their doings. -- Mor sch gla

Purpose

The main purpose of the establishment of the UN was to secure peace and prevent war. Nowadays another important aspect is that all countries develop a good relationship with each other which comes across with the goal of preventing war. Moreover, the UN campaigns for human rights with international communication so every country can develop to a more democratic one. --Ant str gla (Diskussion) 14:35, 10. Jun. 2019 (CEST)
