A letter by Zita Wallace

no. 3

a)

I feel very affected and I’m shocked that this could happen, without any punishments for the nuns who stole the children.

b)

Zita Wallace is one of many children who got stolen between 1910 and 1970. They came into a home for orphans, run by white nuns. They just took thousands of children with fair skin from their families and punished them if they spoke the Aboriginal language for example. They wanted them to forget their Aboriginal past and grow up like white children. They had to work hard but in 1997, a government report apologized to them for this ‘crime’.

It talks of a racist ideal, because they were hit, punished and kidnapped just because of their Aboriginal past. They wanted Aboriginal children to become ‘white’ children and forget about their culture, past, and origin.
