Der amerikanische Nationalfeiertag wird am 4. Juli gefeiert, weil sich an diesem Tage im Jahr 1776 die britischen Kolonien von Großbritannien lossagten und die Unabhängigkeitserklärung unterschrieben.

The 3rd of October is the German national holiday. As you know, Germany was divided into two parts in 1945 after the Second World War: East Germany and West Germany.

The West German government was in Bonn and East Germany’s government was in East Berlin.

In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down, and a year later, in 1990, East and West Germany became one country again on 3rd October, with its central government in Berlin.

Today Germany has 16 states. Five states are in what used to be East Germany. We call them the “Neue Bundesländer”. The other states, in the western part of the country, are called the “Alte Bundesländer”.

Partner A:

I think you will enjoy the parade on the evening before 3rd October. It starts at 7 pm. People will carry lamps with candles in them and it’ll look very nice.

There’s also a classical concert at Schillerpark at 8 pm. You like classical music, don’t you?

On 3rd October, then, you could attend another big parade at 12 noon. All the German states will take part, so you can learn a lot about the different regions and states of Germany.

There will also be a run at 3 pm to raise money to help people who have come to Germany to escape war in their home countries. The money will go to refugees.

Or you can go see a concert with several church choirs. It starts at 4 pm on the town square.

In the evening there will be many events all over the place. You shouldn’t miss the big firework display at 9 pm. Do you have any questions?

Partner B:

You like music, don’t you? Maybe the concert on 2nd October will be something for you. It starts at 8 pm, and lots of German artists will take part. All of them have took part in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Have you ever heard of this song contest? So it should be fun, but it’ll be quite noisy, you know.

Then, on 3rd October, you could attend the big parade at 12 noon. Every German state will show something, so you can learn a lot about the different states of Germany.

In the evening there will be many events all over the place. They are part of the Festival of Lights.

I’m sure you will like walking around the town centre then. What do you think?

Ausnahme: Vom 1. Juni bis Anfang September darf man bis 21 Uhr arbeiten

3 Was für Ferienjobs darfst du machen?

-z.B. Arbeit in einer Großküche, Geschäft, Büro oder Gartenarbeit;

keine Tätigkeiten, bei denen man Auto fahren muss;

You can’t work under 13.

Different:

At 15 in Germany you can work 2 hours a day between 8 am and 6 pm but in the US you can work 3 hours a day between 7 am and 7 pm.

From 15 in Germany you can work full-time (40 hours a week) for 4 weeks in a year but in the US you can work for more weeks, e.g. in the summer holidays.

c)

You could do only light work, like babysitting or helping kids with school work, for two hours a day between 8 in the morning and 6 in the evening.

You would also need your parents’ permission.
