The article “Confederate flag is a symbol of America’s culture wars” by Matt K. Lewis was published on the 27 June 2015 on "The Daily Telegraph". It is about a black woman and a white man and their experiences and opinions to Confederate flag. The author starts his article by describing the situation of a black woman who is living in Washington DC (ll.6-53). The whole part of text is about her own experiences, that is the reason why he uses the personal pronoun “I” (l.16). The pronoun makes the text more personal, so the readership is more interested in the story. She explains that for her it would be terrible, when she sees the flag because she links it to bad memories, which she had to go through. So in her opinion the flag should not be used in public because of the past events. On the opposite to that there is a white man living in South America. The author flips his argument by illustrating the experiences of the man very clever because he is the opposite of the woman, so the text is more interesting. It also shows the reader both of the sides. To come back to the white man. He grew up in America with the gun laws, the big respect to authorities like the police and the fact that homosexuality is a sin. These things all have changed. Nowadays there is no big respect to the police, Obama wanted to reduce the guns in the state and homosexuality is absolute legal. The radical changes is hard for people who grew up with them, especially because it changes like over night. The people like the white man think that the flag is a symbol of old traditions, so they like it. After talking about the experiences of the man, the author summarize both of them and comes to the conclusion that the sides should work together.

First the author mentions the situation of a black woman living in Washington DC. Then he continues by giving real-live examples to make the reader feel involved and this way he/she can put himself/herself in the situation of the black woman. (cf. ll. 6-53)

Second he flips the arguments by illustrating the situation of the white man. It has the effect that the reader sees both positions. Lewis enables the readership to consider pro and contra arguments. He then goes on listing up real-live examples again. (cf. ll. 54-119)

He ends his article by summarizing both arguments and giving a solution to the cultural conflict that is to come together. (cf. ll. 120-136)

Additionally he puts quotes from other people into the article for example „I’m a black woman and I was raised in the South“(ll. 22-23) which should illustrate the situation of concerned people. The author continues with the use of negative words „slavery and lynching and segregation“(ll. 41-42) which should also illustrate the situation. In addition he uses the personal pronoun we „What we need now is to come together“ (ll 120) to directly address the readers and to motivate them. The author not only uses stylistic devices to create his article, he also uses a good language and syntax. All in all he wants to say that both sides should work together.

The purpose of the article is to convey the readers to the current conflict of the Confederate flag, which is a symbol of the division of the American culture.

In the first few lines the author decribes the situation of a black woman who is living in Washington D.C. In context to that he adds real-life exampels of feeling personally attacked of the symbol of the Confiderate flag (cf. ll. 6 -57). So far, the authore wants the readers to feel more involved and wants to effect an empathy for the decribed situation. Furthermore, he continues to illustrate an opposite situation of a white man who is living the Deep South of America by refering to real-life exampels to present the readership both sides of the conflict and to enable the readers to comder both postions (cf. ll. 54-119). Later on, the author summarizes both sides of the balanced argumentation and states his suggestion of a solution to the cultural conflict that both sides should come together (cf. ll. 120-136). Besides, he wants to emphasize the readership with his conclusion that both sides are equal and should comem toghter. Finally, he repeats his main point so that his point remains on the reader´s mind.

Throughout his article Matt Lewis employs a number of stylistic devices to emphasize his point of view. First of all, it becomes clear that the author makes use of the personal pronoun “ you” (ll. 6,10 ff.) throughout the whole text what shows that he tries to directly address the readers to make them feel more involved. Furthermore, the author wants to stress with the use of the alliteration “ place on public property “ (l. 38) that the employment of the flag has an huge impact on those who feel personal and direct attacked of the symbol and the meaning behind the Confederate flag, especially when the flag attends concerned people in public institutions as a daily reminder. Then he goes on drawing attention to the aspect that the Confederate flag has several historical meanings that he mentions by employing the enumeration that it is a symbol of “ slavery and lynching and segregation “ ( ll. 41-42). Besides, he makes use of another enumeration “ Bruce Jenner is a woman, marriage is for two men , and Rachel Dolezal is black “ ( ll.105- 107) what underlines the fact that there is an amount of things in our society which changes over the time. In conetxt to that, the author wants to emphasize that these developments of the standards of life change rapidly and parallel. Moreover, Matt Lewis goes on stating the situation that there are always two sides of a conflict which becomes obvious by including the paralism “ some of these changes are clearly good; some of them will probably lead to problem down the road “ (ll. 113-114).

Regarding to his use of informal language it is becoming clear that he makes use of the personal pronoun “I” ( 19, 23 ff.) to build a bound to the readership due to the intention that the readers feel more involved and addressed. Besides, it is apparent that the author makes mostly use of words with a negative tone that refer to problems and the cultural conflict, for example “slavery “ (l.41) and “attack”(l.68). In addtion to that itis obvious that he uses verbs in past tense purposely to relate on the Americans history and the difference between the past and the changes nowadays. With regard to her tone of his article it can be said that the light of the article is overall kind of negative for example when he includes the black history of America (cf. ll.40-42). In addition to that he tries to be motivating and appeals the readership to follow the suggestion of the author to come together and to build an union (cf.ll. 121-136).

In general I come to the desicion that the article is really conving with regard to the sensefull structure of the text, the given examples for a better understanding and the comparison of both points of views and the final conclusion with the appeal to a federation of the two sides of the American´s culture.

All in all, I come to the conclusion that his article is very convincing and the structure leads to a good understanding, because he explains both sides well, which shows the equal and that the two parts should live and work together.

Lewis and published in The Daily Telegraph on the 27th of June 2015 deals with the division within the American culture. The article appeals to every American citizen and its main purpose is to encourage the audience to empathise with other people. In order to accomplish that, the text conveys two different points of view as to whether the confederate flag should be displayed on public property. One of these opinions belongs to a black woman, who does not want the flag to be displayed in public places, whereas the other one belongs to a white man. In the first few lines the author refers to the situation of the black woman(ll.6-15) by telling the audience to “pretend for a minute (…) (they’re) a professional black woman”(ll.6f.), which is supposed to evoke a sense of empathy and understanding in the audience. Furthermore, the article deals with an interview with the black woman (ll.16-35), who doesn’t want the confederate flag to be shown in public places, as “(i)t represents a period in American history that one set of Americans -white Americans from the south- wanted to own blacks as property”(ll.31ff.). Additionally, the author states his own opinion on this topic (ll.36ff.) and continues to talk about the value of empathising with other people (ll.36-53). Moreover, the author makes the audience imagine to be “a 50-year old white man living somewhere in the deep South(.)”(ll.54ff.) and finally he concludes that it is very important to be compassionate and empathetic(ll.129-136). The article at hand employs several stylistic devices in order to keep the audience engaged and to underline the worth of empathy in times of conflict. The author uses very inclusive language by repeatedly addressing the audience directly with the personal pronoun “you”. He furthermore requests the audience to imagine to be somebody else(ll.6,54), which is supposed to evoke the peoples’ interest and attention. Additionally, there is a repetition of the phrasing of the request that the audience should imagine being a black woman in America(ll.6,ll.54), which emphasises that the action of pretending to be a white man is supposed to be treated the same way (as pretending to be a black woman). This alludes to the purpose of the article, which is to make people empathise with each other rather than to bring others down, simply because they may have a different point of view on a certain topic. Moreover, the author uses an enumeration roughly describing the upbringing of a 50-year old white man (ll.56-60) and an enumeration regarding changes in America(ll.65-112). Those enumerations highlight the large quantity of changes in America and allude to the possible difficulty in adjusting. The enumerations also represent most of the article, which sets an example of empathy and understanding, which is emphasised as the author of the article is “among the many Americans who agree the Confederate flag has no place on public property”(ll.36ff.). The tone of the text is rather motivational, which is especially underlined by the positive word field in the last paragraph, including words such as “perfect”(ll.136) and “(to) achieve”(ll.135). In conclusion it can be said that this analysis reveals the central message of this article to be the importance of being respectful to all people regardless of their opinions and of trying to show compassion towards other people.
