a) adjectives and adverbs

There was a (really big) house.

We played a (very interesting) game.

There was a (quite exciting) event.

He ran away (quickly).

She hit him (hard).

I (fearlessly) fought the big dragon.

b) linking words

I am rich. I am tall. === I am rich and tall.

I like her. She doesn't like me. === I like her, but she doesn't like me.

and, but, so, because, also, although, whereas...

c) time and place

I fought the dragon. === Last Monday I fought the dragon in a cave.

I played with Tim. === Last weekend I played with Tim at home.

She bought a new dress. == She bought a new dress at the shop last weekend. (place before time)

d) relative clauses/the passive voice

This is the boy. He screams. === This is the boy who screams.

This is my shirt. I really like it. === This is the shirt I really like.

The restaurant opened last weekend. === The restaurant was opened by my friend last weekend.

The police closed the club. === The club was closed by the police.
