[possible solutions]

a)

There are great differences in climate and temperature. In Death Valley in California it is hot and dry. In the mountains in Colorado it can get very cold with snow and winter skiing.

A second contrast is seen in the towns and cities of the Southwest. In Taos, New Mexico, there are adobe houses of the Pueblo Indians which are over a thousand years old.

In contrast, there are cities in Nevada and Arizona which are less than 150 years old, for example Las Vegas and Phoenix.

b)

Because of the mostly dry climate, there are long droughts in summer.

Large dams on the big rivers bring water and energy to the Southwest states.

Hoover Dam on the Colorado River is built on the Nevada-Arizona border.

c)

Before the region of the Southwest became part of the US in 1848, it had been part of a Spanish colony for hundreds of years, then part of Mexico.

Because of the long border with Mexico, many Latin Americans became settlers in the Southwest. Los Angeles and Phoenix have a high Latino population.
