G7

Brief history • because of the oil and financial crisis • heads of state and government of the six leading industrial countries met in 1975 for the first time to discuss the global economy • joined in 1976 by Canada and in 1998 by Russia • G7 nations decided in March 2014 to meet without Russia until further notice • France, West Germany, the USA, Japan, the United Kingdom and Italy discussed the oil shock, the financial crisis and the ways out of recession • result of the huge economic problems facing the world in the 1970s. • 1980s the G7 extended its interests to embrace foreign and security policy issues • International challenges at that time included the long-standing conflict between Iran and Iraq and the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan

Tasks of the G7 summit

The G7 summit also called group of seven, exist of seven world´s wealthiest and most powerful countries. Their political leaders gather annually and discuss important economic, political, social and security issues. They were formed because of the oil crisis in 1973 to discuss the resulting economic and political problems. But instead of dissolve the G7 after handling the oil crisis they expand their tasks on much more international issues, including energy security, trade, climate change, global health issues, gender equality, poverty... The topics are determined by the country that has the presidency of the G7. This year (2019) France has the presidency and their focus on: -More equality, in particualr gender equality, accsess of education and health services of adequate quality -Reducing environmental inequalities, protecting the planet, bioderversity, oceans -Support of fair and more sustainable trade, tax and development policies -Commitment to peace and fighting against terrorism -Ethically acceptable use of the opportunities of digitization and artificial intelligence
